La Llorona
About the Painting
Garr wanted to depict the famous Mexican folk tale of “La Llorona” (the Weeping Woman) who appears near water as a wailing ghost mourning her children who were drowned by her husband because of her alleged infidelity. Whoever encounters her or hears her moaning is condemned to misfortune.
The legend of weeping ghosts near lakes and rivers is a frequent theme in pre-Columbian culture. These ancient legends usually involve a vengeful spirit-woman associated with death, hunger, or the underworld. In particular, the goddess Tenpecutli who suffered for having drowned her own children in a river.
Because this is such an important folk tale that is embedded in Mexican culture, Garr wanted to create his own imagining of the legend.
