About the Painting
Garr was invited to take part in a bi-national exhibition that would start in Columbia, and then finish in Mexico. The theme was “Cuerpos Cofrades” (Brotherhood).
Garr's normal process for creating a new piece, is to first develop a concept. After mulling this over for a week or so, he came up with the idea of the common roots between Mexico and Columbia (indeed, with all of Latin America).
Then he thought about what image could express this. After a few days further thought, he started to visualise an indigenous Columbian and an indigenous Mexican literally entwined as a tree – with common roots.
Now that he had an image is his mind, he was ready to execute the painting. He added the flags of both countries in the background, and, in the bottom left, added a tortoise – a potent symbol of cosmic creation and resurrection in Aztec and Mayan cosmologies.
