The Chameleon & the Rose

Digital Painting: The Chameleon & the Rose

About the Painting

This digital painting is a surrealist image of an octopus holding a long-stemmed rose, onto which is perched a panther chameleon.

Garr's concept for this work was to present a trio of objects that don't normally appear together. These individual elements are favourites from Garr's memories, and just seemed to fill the bill perfectly:

He has always been fascinated by octopii (yes... I know... “octopuses” just doesn't feel right), so this was a natural fit.

A beautiful, red long-stemmed rose is always a great subject for a painting. The fact that the stem of this rose couldn't possibly support the weight of the chameleon just adds to the surrealism.

Garr loves lizards of all sorts, but a particular favourite is the panther chameleon — because of its incredible colouring.

The result is an imagining of a seemingly impossible scene, dredged from the recesses of Garr’s mind. Or perhaps it's something he saw at the end of his garden. No one can be sure.
