Mariachi Feminil / Female Mariachis

Digital Painting: Mariachi Feminil / Female Mariachis

About the Painting

Mariachi is one of the most distinctive styles of Mexican music — many (including Garr) would call it “the musical soul of Mexico.”

It originated in the Mexican state of Jalisco (where Garr lives), and dates back to the 18th century. A group is usually made up of from five to 14 members. Traditionally, the groups of musicians who play Mariachi have been men.

Garr created this digital painting to celebrate a recent phenomenon in Mexico, the Mariachi Feminil (female Mariachi band). Some of these groups have started to become quite famous.

These two musicians were part of a group who perform in the canals of Xochimilco in Mexico City.

Imagine the thumping bass of the guitarrón and the haunting strains of “Cielito Lindo” playing as you examine this work.
