Parroquia San Andrés / St Andrews Parish Church

Digital Painting: Parroquia San Andrés / St Andrews Parish Church

About the Painting

Garr has long admired the iconic stone facade of the Parroquia San Andrés church (St. Andrews Parish Church) in Ajijic.

Fray Martín de Jesús established it around 1530 as a church devoted to St. Francis of Assisi. At the time, it was the second oldest monastery in western New Spain (Mexico). Several years later, it was renamed to San Andrés de Ajijic, at the same time that St. Andrew became the town's patron saint. The original wooden building was destroyed by a hurricane, and the existing stone church was built in 1749.

Garr took some artistic license to “improve” its appearance (an advantage painters have over photographers!). There is a significantly more modern (and ugly) low, white building attached to the left side of the church. This offended Garr's sense of beauty and symmetry, so he eliminated it – adding a wall and some trees. Again, for symmetry, he added the large tree on the right.
